The Origin Of Clocks And The Various Types Found In The Home

Prior to the clock as we know it today there was the sundial and the hourglass.  These are all devices that tell time in some way.  The clock is one of the oldest inventions in world history.  Clocks have undergone a huge evolution over the years.  Water, pendulums, gears and wheels are some of the things used to tell time.  Today digital technology has overtaken this industry.  Even with that fact, people still love to collect other kinds of vintage and modern timepieces. The following information will provide you with an overview of several different types of time keeping devices from antique to modern.

The reasons for buying a clock or two vary from whether you like to collect old vintage timepieces or you simply need one to tell the time. Clocks can be used in any room in your home from the living room to your children's rooms.  They come in various types with different features that range from decorative to functional or a combination of both.  For instance, the chiming feature on these time keepers can be comforting and alert you to the time every hour.  The chiming feature can be included on a mantle, wall or grandfather clock and can be loud, soft, high toned or low toned.  Another example of a functional and decorative timepiece is the tambour style mantle clock which typically has a classic vintage look.  As with other items in your home choosing this kind of time keeping device is determined by your personal taste.

Let's go back in time just a bit to the 1700's and discuss the cuckoo clock.  These creative and interesting timepieces were created in the Black Forest in Germany.  The Swiss joined in a few years later and developed the chalet style clock at the end of the 19th century.  These have become a highly collectible item by avid timepiece collectors all over the world.  Traditional chalet cuckoo clocks mount on the wall and can have either musical chimes or automated birds that chirp on the hour every hour.

German and Swiss made timepieces are also very popular collectibles because they are considered to be the most reliable at keeping time.  If you happen to buy a German or Swiss vintage clock that is not in working condition you can find a repair shop that can likely handle any kind of repairs you might need.  It takes an expert to ensure these kinds of time devices are properly repaired.

There are many fine brands that produce accurate, decorative, functional and quality timepieces of all kinds.  Ridgeway, Hoenes and Bulova are the most popular brand of choice especially for people with discriminating taste in quality time keepers.  These and other manufacturers make various kinds of timepieces including miniature versions of classic time devices as well as figurine related devices.  As a matter of fact you can likely find a clock within your favorite kind of figurine.  No matter why you want or need clocks, you can find them in just about any style you want.

This is an interresting site! I never really thought about children's clocks too much, I was googling for some unusual clocks that also teach kids (fun clocks essentially), and this site came up in my search. I learned a lot from just this page, thank you for being so detailed! You saved me a lot of research but also gave me some great ideas (and termonology I needed to research correctly!)... thanks again! you rock!J
